DOT Physicals Q&A

What are DOT physicals?

DOT physicals are physical exams required by the FMCSA to assess the health and wellness of individuals with occupations considered safety-sensitive. Your employer informs you if you need a DOT physical before starting your job.

The FMCSA requires DOT physicals for people who operate:

  • An interstate motor vehicle that weighs 10,000 pounds or more
  • Vehicles that carry eight or more people
  • Vehicles that transport hazardous material

You also need a DOT physical to maintain your commercial driver’s license. FMCSA only allows certified and licensed providers to perform DOT exams. Bay Wellness Center is a certified provider.

What do I need to bring to my DOT physical?

Dr. Shawl and the team at Bay Wellness Center provide a list of items you need to bring to your DOT physical. These may include:

  • Government-issued identification (driver’s license)
  • Names and addresses of all your doctors
  • List of medications and dosages
  • Eyeglasses or hearing aids if you wear them

The team may also require specific medical documentation based on your medical history. For example, if you have diabetes, you need to provide the team with your most recent hemoglobin A1C and blood sugar labs. If you have heart disease, a letter from your cardiologist stating your heart condition won’t affect you or the public’s safety.

What happens during a DOT physical?

Your DOT physical at Bay Wellness Center is comprehensive, but not a replacement for your annual wellness exam. During your examination, Dr. Shawl checks your vision, hearing, blood pressure, and heart rate. He also conducts a urinalysis to assess health issues such as diabetes.

Dr. Shawl then performs a physical exam to evaluate your general health and appearance.

After your DOT physical, Dr. Shawl determines if you meet the health requirements set forth by FMCSA and completes the required Medical Examination Report.

In some cases, Dr. Shawl and his team may require additional testing or medical records before making a final decision. For example, if your vision test indicates you need glasses, the team at Bay Wellness Center may request you visit an eye doctor for an evaluation.
